MCP in 2026: why AI agents are finally entering business tools

For many leaders, AI agents have remained stuck at the demo stage until now. The interfaces were compelling. The responses were sometimes very good. But the step toward real usage remained laborious, because a useful agent must read documents, call tools, write to a CRM, trigger a workflow, or retrieve an indicator from a database. In short, the obstacle was no longer the conversation. The obstacle was integration.

March 2026 marks a real inflection. In just a few days, Google published a structured guide to agent protocols, launched an open-source MCP server to control Google Colab, and continued deploying managed MCP servers on Google Cloud. At the same time, the 2026 roadmap for the Model Context Protocol, MCP, clearly moved the debate toward scalability, governance, and enterprise readiness. ServiceNow published a new version of its AI Gateway centered on MCP connection governance, with a registry, approvals, sensitive data protection, and analytics. Anthropic had already formalized, in late 2025, a native MCP connector in its API to connect Claude to remote servers without writing a custom client.

The signal is clear. In 2026, the central topic is no longer only whether autonomous AI agents know how to reason. It is how to connect them properly to business tools. For enterprise AI, especially for SMEs and mid-sized businesses in France, Switzerland, and the UAE, this is probably the most important news of the month. It changes the strategic question. You no longer only ask which model to choose. You ask which integration, security, and observability layer will allow an AI agent to act without turning the information system into a fragile patchwork.

Why MCP is becoming the real business topic

The guide published by Google on March 18 restates an essential point: not everything called an agent is the same technical problem. MCP connects an agent to tools and data. A2A connects agents to each other. Other protocols handle commerce, payment, interface, or streaming. This distinction is useful because many companies still mix all these building blocks into a single confused discussion about AI agents.

For a business, the first step is generally not to orchestrate ten specialized agents or design a highly dynamic interface. The first step is much more grounded: allow an agent to find reliable data, use an authorized tool, and leave a usable trace. That is exactly the space MCP is in the process of standardizing.

Google Cloud states this clearly in its announcement of official MCP support for its services. The goal is to provide remote, consistent, enterprise-ready endpoints so that agents can interact with services like BigQuery, Google Maps, GCE, or GKE without each team rebuilding its own integration layer. Weeks later, Google extended this logic with managed MCP servers for AlloyDB, Spanner, Cloud SQL, Bigtable, and Firestore. The message is simple: the agent should come to the system, not force the company to move its data into an application patch.

For AI automation, this is a change in nature. Until now, many projects relied on homemade connectors, intermediate scripts, and improvised permissions. Each new use case added a specific layer. That model does not hold when usage becomes serious. A standard protocol does not solve everything, but it reduces the assembly cost and clarifies responsibilities. That is precisely what enterprise AI needs if it wants to move beyond the experimentation stage.

What the March 2026 announcements change concretely

1. AI agents move from local to remote

The 2026 MCP roadmap is explicit. The protocol has moved beyond its origins as a simple gateway to local tools. It is already running in production at companies of various sizes. Its priority is therefore no longer only adding capabilities, but fixing the friction points that appear when it must be operated at scale. The first priority concerns transport and scalability. The project wants to evolve the model so that MCP servers can operate as remote services, behind serious infrastructure, without depending on unmanageable session states.

This seems technical, but its business impact is direct. As long as an agent depends on a local, fragile, poorly portable integration, it remains a prototype. Once the integration becomes a remote, governable, loggable, reusable endpoint, the agent starts to resemble an enterprise component. That is exactly what the Google Cloud announcements show, as does the Anthropic MCP connector, which lets you point directly to a remote MCP server in an API request.

2. Business tools become cleanly exposable to AI agents

The launch of the Colab MCP server by Google is interesting for a simple reason. This is not a marketing gadget. Google opens Colab as a workspace that any MCP-compatible agent can control. The agent can create cells, install dependencies, execute code, and structure a reproducible notebook. This shows that MCP is no longer limited to file reads or incidental calls. It is becoming a standard way to expose a real working environment to an agent.

For an SME's AI agent, the lesson is broader than Colab. If a compute environment can be exposed as a standard tool, then a CRM, a document base, a support tool, or an internal application can follow the same logic. That progression is what makes the arrival of autonomous AI agents in concrete business processes credible, provided minimal permissions and human supervision are maintained whenever a sensitive write is involved.

3. Governance arrives at the same time, not after

The strongest business signal of the moment may come from ServiceNow. The March 2026 version of AI Gateway treats MCP as a surface to govern, not as a simple integration detail. The product introduces a centralized registry of MCP servers, approval workflows, import from the community registry, automated client registration via CIMD, PII detection at the gateway level, connection analytics, and actual enforcement of approvals in AI Agent Studio.

In other words, the enterprise market already considers that an agent should not connect freely to any tool. You need to know which server is active, who approved it, which client connects to it, what sensitive data transits, and how to cut flows in case of a problem. The MCP roadmap confirms exactly the same direction with its enterprise readiness priority, citing audit trails, authentication connected to SSO, gateway behavior, and configuration portability.

This is a key point for AI agents in enterprise. The topic is no longer only model performance. It is becoming execution governance. That is also why yesterday's article on Meta was right, but from a more defensive angle. The positive extension today is exactly this: the ecosystem is finally putting in place the building blocks that allow a permissions incident, a data exposure, or uncontrolled access to be prevented rather than addressed after the fact.

Why this is particularly important for enterprise AI in smaller markets

According to INSEE, 10% of French companies with 10 or more employees were using at least one AI technology in 2024. The curve is rising, but the market remains far from massive, controlled integration. In many SMEs and mid-sized companies, the problem is not a total absence of interest. It is the gap between occasional tests and clean deployment into everyday tools.

The MCP protocol addresses precisely that in-between. It provides a framework for connecting an agent to existing systems without reinventing an integration for each use case. This matters enormously for a company that wants to move quickly without building a twenty-person platform team. The standard does not eliminate architecture work. It does reduce the improvisation debt that typically accompanies early AI automation projects.

Gartner estimates that 33% of enterprise software applications will incorporate agentic capabilities by 2028, versus less than 1% in 2024. Gartner also estimates that at least 15% of daily work decisions will be made autonomously by that point. If this trajectory holds, companies have every reason to standardize now how their future agents access data and tools. Otherwise, they will accumulate a stock of heterogeneous connectors that slows everything else down.

For a leader, the right reading is therefore not: should I do MCP because it is fashionable? The right reading is: what common layer will I use to connect my agents to my information system without losing control? This is an architecture question, but also a matter of cost, security, execution speed, and compliance.

What an SME or mid-sized company should do now

The classic temptation is to immediately launch multiple autonomous AI agents, then wonder afterwards how to govern them. That is the wrong order. The March 2026 signals sketch out a much healthier sequence.

  • Choose a single high-volume, clear, measurable business workflow. For example, commercial qualification, level-1 support, report preparation, or document access.
  • Identify the tools actually needed for that workflow. A good AI agent does not need global access. It needs the useful minimum.
  • Define who exposes tools to the agent, in what form, with what authentication, and with what action logs.
  • Plan a gateway or control point for sensitive flows. The ServiceNow model, registry, approval, analytics, PII blocking, is an excellent maturity reference.
  • Keep humans on write actions that commit client data, compliance, or transactions.
  • Measure a business indicator from the start: time saved, resolution rate, processing time, data quality, or influenced revenue.

For those topics, you need other building blocks and, above all, good scope decisions.

But that is precisely why MCP is becoming so important. By clarifying the tool and data layer, it reduces a large part of the current confusion. A company can then reason more cleanly: which agent does what, with which tools, in what framework, with what execution evidence, and with what level of autonomy.

The moment to watch is not the appearance of a new spectacular agent on social media. The real inflection point will be reached when companies consider it normal for a business tool to expose a remote, documented, approved, and observable MCP surface, in the same way they eventually came to consider exposing APIs or webhooks as normal. Everything seen this week is pushing in that direction.

For enterprise AI actors in France, Switzerland, and the UAE, this is good news. It allows you to exit the false choice between rapid innovation and control. The two are finally beginning to converge. Companies that structure this integration layer early will be able to deploy autonomous AI agents more progressively, more safely, and more profitably. The others risk mainly stacking proof-of-concepts without a technical backbone.
